Professor Hofmann was assistant in the Rothampstead Laboratory under my superintendence from Novr 1849 to Oct - 1857 during which time he executed a great amount and variety of analytical work, and I have much pleasure in testifying to his great experience in such work, knowledge, conscientiousness, and attention to accuracy he brings to bear in the conduct of chemical enquiries, in illustration I may refer to one example among many,
to his labours in connection with the investigation of Mr Lawes and myself "on the composition of some of the animals fed and slaughtered as human food; which it gave us great pleasure to acknowledge in our paper published in part 2 of the Philosophical transactions for 1859. Since Mr Manning left the Rothampstead Laboratory in 1857 he has been
consulting and analytical Chemist in London, and in that capacity, has doubtless had a much more varied experience, whilst his practice in teaching during the greater part of that period must have materially added to his qualifications for the position of Lecturer on Chemistry and teacher in the Laboratory.
